Tucked between all sorts of fascinating historical moments is a really charming and unique love story. Or call it a more grand love story with bits of history and worldly insights studded throughout. Like the two main characters (the house and the painting), the book has a genius framing device which makes it stand out from the crowd. I've never read anything like it and I won't forget it anytime soon. A page-turner and a fast, gripping read. It flies off the page and anyone with half an interest in history (whether of people, art, ideas, or language) will laugh and cry plenty through it.
